February in Eryri

17th February 2026

Winter conditions – two years in a row – but again we had to go a long way up to find them. Not exactly full-on winter but a spot of snow and ice certainly helped give a flavour. Lovely weather made for some great views too.

Three group chose routes on Y Garn and the Glyders with the Carneddau being the preferred option for the team of intrepid Explorers. Crampons and axes were deployed in most cases and there was some training in ice axe arrests for a couple of the groups. The intrepid Explorers even had to get the rope out at one point!

Sunday was definitely a low level day however as the wind and rain made for a more typical Welsh mountain experience.

All-in-all a great weekend with thanks as always to all the leaders and drivers for making it happen. A special mention for Judy who volunteered to be BCM and ensure that dinner was ready on time – including home-made bread pudding. Thanks also to 5th Northfleet (Kipling) and Headcorn Scout Groups for the use of their minibuses and trailer
