Assessment applications
Applying for training and assessments
If you have questions about hill walking training and assessment, or to register your interest, you can contact the assessment team at any time.
Formal hill walking training and assessments generally take place on a specific IMC event in early November (see the events calendar) but we can also carry out assessments during other, suitable events if sufficient assessors are available.
However, you can apply for a Hill walking assessment at any time by completing the online application form on the Scout Association Membership system. Use "Explore permits" or "Permit search", select "Hillwalking" and then "Apply". Please search/select "Neil Pickford" as the Assessor and he will deal with your application appropriately.
Note: there is currently a problem with TSA member system which won't allow you to upgrade an existing permit or apply for the same permit beyond a year from its expiry date. If you fall into either of these two categories then please use the "UPGRADE YOUR PERMIT" link below to apply rather than via the Scout Association Membership website.
You must have applied for your assessment (including submitting a log book) before attending the practical hill assessment. First time candidates will also have to complete a Home paper
Cost of assessments
We aim to keep the cost of Hill Walking Assessment trips to a minimum and IMC subsidises the trip.
You are also entitled to apply for a grant from HQ towards the cost of your assessment but it must be done at least 4 weeks in advance of the trip.
Many groups or districts will also contribute to the cost of an assessment and you should contact your GSL or DC for further information.
Notes:
To include wild camping on your permit, you will need to attend the May IMC trip so that your wild camping can be practically assessed, as we cannot assess for camping on the November trip.
Sorry but we cannot generally assess for scrambling. Occasionally we have the services of an Assessor who is able to do this and when available, will be advertised as part of an event.
Climbing assessments
IMC do not deal with climbing assessments. Instead, please contact the county climbing team.
