May in Yorkshire
28th May 2024
Great to see a lot of new faces for a good weekend in the Yorkshire Dales despite some very mixed weather. As you can see from the photos, Saturday was glorious but Sunday and Monday, not so much – it's not often you expect to get torrential hail at the end of May!
All parties teams completed the 3 Peaks but not the official "Y3P Challenge" (in 12 hours). Three parties did the full round but with a wild camp on Whernside overnight on Saturday, which is much more civilised. The forth party also ticked all 3 Peaks but did so by way of two days walks from base camp, with the aid of a lift to Ribblesdale on Saturday morning.
Sadly we weren't able to do the Gaping Gill winch on Monday as it was massively over-subscribed and would have involved an 8 hour wait! One group went up to have a look at the gill anyway; another satisfied themselves with a wander around Ingleborough Cave; while a third drove over to Malham for a round of the Cove and Goredale Scar. Of course, the sun came back out just as we started striking camp...
Thanks to all the party leaders for their skills, as well as 5th Northfleet and Culverston & Vigo Scout groups for use of their buses once again. Also to Dom, Dave, Andy Judy and Neil for driving those buses there and back safely and Jack for delivering the 5th bus. Lastly Mark for transporting some of the group kit.
